How to Create a Password-Protected PDF QR Code?

Password protection is a must when you need to share private document. In this article, I'll let you go through step by steps guide to safety share your PDF via QR code with a password-enabled.

This guide will use ZodQR, a free dynamic QR code generator to create a QR code from PDF document. You can then share it online with password protection for free.

Create a QR code from PDF document

ZodQR has more than 30 QR code types, all free to create. To share PDF documents online, we will use PDF QR code type.

  1. Go to the PDF QR code generator
  2. Click Choose file to upload button, and select your PDF file. Free user can upload PDF file upto 10MB. To upload PDF file upto 5GB, you will need a paid subscription and generate QR code from Dashboard.
  3. You can enable Add cover page to show a page with cover image and description text instead of showing PDF file directly when visit QR link. Styling cover page with color if you enabled it.
  4. Click Generate PDF QR. You will be asked to create a free account. Create an account with Google or email, your account is forever free to use.
  5. Your PDF QR is now ready. Visit the link, it's not protected yet. We will add a password in next section.

Add password to protect online PDF document

Now your PDF document is live, let's add a password to protect the link.

  1. From ZodQR Dashboard (you're already here from previous steps), click the Config button of the generated QR code.
  2. Enable the Password option. Then enter your desired password. For a private document, your password should memorable and related to your business. You can also custom the password page, add text and photo that fit with your business. After finished, click Save.
  3. Now, when you visit your document link again, it will ask for a password. Anyone want to access the document must enter the correct password. The session is 30 minutes, means if enter correct password and revisit the link within next 30 minutes, they don't have to enter the password again.

Remove / update password for the PDF document

To update password, open the config modal again and enter new password into the input. Click Save and the change will apply immediately. Open PDF document link in a new private browser tab if you're still in 30 minutes session to test new password.

To remove password, simply disable the Password option, and click Save. New config will be applied immediately.

Custom password page

Custom password page is available for Plus subscription users (from $6/mo) and above. Paid QR codes also remove ZodQR branding completely.

To customize your password page:

  1. From ZodQR Dashboard, click Config button of the QR code you want.
  2. In the Password section enabled, click Custom password page. A preview for password page will show up.
  3. Here, you can customize text, password input placeholder text, button text, and the image. Simply clicking on each section on the page to customize.
  4. After finished, click Publish. Saved password page will take effect immediately. Test new page with a private browser window.
