Both static and dynamic URL QR codes are free to generate with ZodQR. In this guide, we'll use ZodQR's free Link to QR Code Generator to quickly convert any link into a QR code and customize it to match your brand.

Decide whether you need a static or dynamic QR code, then enter your link. Make sure your URL starts with https://. For example: https://zodqr.com/guides/how-to-create-qr-code-from-link

2. (Optional) Add UTM parameters for marketing campaigns

If you want to track QR code scans in Google Analytics or another analytics platform, you can optionally add UTM parameters to your link. Adding UTM parameters is free with ZodQR. ZodQR will build the complete URL for you before converting it into a QR code.

3. Customize your QR code

After setting your destination URL, click Style QR Code to customize your QR code's appearance. All customization options are available for free to ZodQR users:

  • Change the QR code patterns (body and eyes).
  • Set the pattern and background colors.
  • Add a logo to the center of the QR code.
  • Add a frame with text, such as "SCAN ME".

If you're creating a static QR code, click Download after customizing it. Select your preferred format and QR code size, then download and share your QR code. ZodQR lets you download high-resolution QR codes for free at resolutions of up to 4096 × 4096 pixels in multiple formats.

If you're creating a dynamic QR code, click Save QR Code. You'll be prompted to sign up for a free account to save and share your QR code. Once you sign up, your QR code will be saved automatically. It will never expire and will include unlimited scans.

Static vs. dynamic URL QR codes: Which should you choose?

Choose a static URL QR code if:

  • You want to provide quick, direct access to your website.
  • You don't need to change the destination after printing your QR code.
  • You want to track scans through Google Analytics using UTM parameters, or you don't need to track QR code scan performance.
  • You don't want your users to be redirected through ZodQR's proxy domain. To avoid this, you can create a dynamic QR code with a custom domain.

Choose a dynamic URL QR code if:

  • You want to track QR code scan performance from the same dashboard where you manage your QR codes.
  • You want to update the destination URL after printing, whether to correct a mistake or change the destination in the future.
  • You want to use advanced features such as password protection, scheduling or expiration, scan limits, and more.

How to update a dynamic URL QR code's destination

One benefit of a dynamic QR code is that you can change its destination URL without changing the QR code image itself.

To update a dynamic URL QR code's destination:

  1. From your Dashboard, select the QR code you want to update and click Edit QR Code Content.
  2. Edit the destination URL.
  3. Click Save Changes. The new destination will take effect immediately.
